Managing Inquiry Form Spam and False Lockouts
Your store's inquiry form includes protections to help keep out automated spam. In addition to reCAPTCHA, there is a separate Submissions Limit setting that controls how many times the form can be submitted within a set period of time. Understanding this setting can help you address two related problems: spam still getting through, or legitimate customers being blocked.
Problem 1: Spam Is Still Getting Through
Even with reCAPTCHA enabled, you may notice unwanted or automated submissions coming through your inquiry form. To reduce this, the Submissions Limit can be lowered so that fewer submissions are allowed per hour, which makes it harder for spammers to send repeated messages.
Recommendation: We do not advise setting the limit below 2 submissions per 60 minutes. Going lower than this risks blocking genuine customer inquiries.
Problem 2: Real Customers Are Being Locked OutThe flip side of the same setting can cause a different issue. If a legitimate, repeat customer tries to submit the form and sees a message like:
"Inquiry form has been locked and your activity logged due to suspicious activity"
…this usually means the Submissions Limit is set too aggressively for your store's normal traffic. Genuine customers who need to reach out more than once in a short window may be blocked by mistake.
How to Fix Either IssueThe Submissions Limit is best reviewed and adjusted by our support team to match your store's real traffic patterns.
Please contact WSM Support if:
- Spam is still coming through your inquiry form, or
- Real customers are being locked out and shown the "suspicious activity" message
- ⚠️ Don't set the limit too low. A limit below 2 submissions per 60 minutes may block legitimate inquiries.
- ⚠️ Don't set the limit too high. A limit that is too permissive can allow more spam to get through.
- ✅ The goal is a balanced setting that blocks spam while still letting real customers reach you. Our support team can help you find the right value.
