Understanding and Requesting Design & Layout Changes for Your WSM Store
Your store's design and layout—things like navigation menus, category page columns, product image sizing, and featured product styling—can be customized to match your brand and improve the shopping experience. This article explains the most common types of layout adjustments store owners request and how to get them done.
Common Layout Areas You Can Customize
Based on frequent store-owner requests, the following areas are commonly adjusted:
- Navigation menus – Fixing dropdown menus that only open when you hover over specific spots (often a padding issue), or removing/hiding dropdown items on desktop and mobile.
- Category page layout – Changing the number of product columns (for example, from 3 columns to 2), which can also reduce confusing empty space at the bottom of a page.
- Product page layout – Correcting content that isn't wide enough or overlaps when a product has multiple images.
- Featured product controls – Restyling elements like "Prev" and "Next" arrows on the home page.
- Page borders and backgrounds – Ensuring a background color (such as black) extends fully across a page instead of leaving white borders.
- Third-party widgets – Making embedded elements (such as reviews widgets) more compact so they take up less space.
- Reusable templates – Creating editable, duplicatable landing page or category section templates.
Most design and layout changes involve editing your store's CSS (the styling code) or template files. These are handled by the WSM support team.
Because these edits affect the styling of your live site, they are typically handled by our team rather than adjusted directly in a standard settings page.
How to Request a Layout ChangeTo get a layout change made quickly and accurately, follow these steps:
- Identify the exact page(s) affected. Copy the full URL(s) where you see the issue.
- Describe what you see now and what you want instead. For example: "The category page shows 3 columns; please change it to 2 columns."
- Include a screenshot or short video if possible. Marking up an image (for example, circling the area in red) helps us see exactly what you mean.
- Note where the issue appears — desktop, mobile, or both. Some changes need to be applied separately for each.
- Submit your request to WSM Technical Support with the details above.
Providing these up front helps avoid back-and-forth:
- The specific menu item, button, or section name (e.g., a particular navigation link).
- Whether the change should apply to one page or multiple pages.
- Any reference example — such as another page or site with the look you want.
- Some changes are quick; others are larger projects. Simple tweaks (like adjusting menu padding or column count) can often be done quickly, while custom, reusable templates may require a quote before work begins.
- Column counts and item limits interact. If you change a category page to a certain number of columns, the number of products shown per page may affect whether the layout looks balanced. Let us know if empty space at the bottom is a concern.
- Multiple images and page width. If product pages have several images, mention it—layout width may need adjusting to prevent overlap.
- Test on both desktop and mobile. After a change is applied, review the page on a phone as well as a computer, since layouts can behave differently on each.
If you're unsure which layout element to change or how to describe it, reach out to WSM Technical Support with the affected page URLs and a screenshot. Our team can review the styling and make the appropriate adjustments for your store.
